The Assistant Cook is responsible for aiding in the preparation of quality food in a sanitary and efficient manner. They must also maintain kitchen cleanliness, support the compost program, and follow all safety and hygiene procedures.

The Assistant Cook Trainee will work under the direction of the Chief Atahm School. The Assistant is responsible for aiding the Cook in the preparation of quality food in a timely, efficient, sanitary, and consistent manner. The Assistant Cook trainee works in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining the organizational ability to identify and act on job duties quickly and effectively. The Assistant must be prepared to work as a team member in a dynamic workplace and follow all safety procedures. Eligible participants are First Nations youth ordinarily resident on reserve, in recognized communities or on community lands. Eligible participants must be legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 to 30 at the start of the program’s activities. Mentored work placements are for youth who are not in school, unemployed, or underemployed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Adams Lake Indian Band policies and procedures * Assist in preparation and cooking of food on a regular basis, for special guests and functions * Ensuring high standards of food hygiene and follow the rules of health and safety * Cleans and maintains station in practicing good safety, sanitation, organizational skills * Ensures quality and safety of food by performing standard and any additional sanitary measures including washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, as well as proper covering and storage of food items according to standards and procedures * Supports the compost program * Performs other duties as required QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS * Food Safe certification is an asset * Excellent interpersonal skills and fluent communication skills in English * Must possess a passion for food and developing knowledge of all cooking methods SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES N/A PHYSICAL DEMANDS Standing for long periods of time cooking or serving Working in kitchen familiar of potential hazards WORKING CONDITIONS The majority of work is performed indoors in a kitchen setting. Hours may vary. EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE Stove, Oven, Dishwasher, Microwave, kitchen utensils OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must be legally entitled to work in Canada Must be between the ages of 15 to 30 at the start of the program’s activities Must not be in school, and be either unemployed, or underemployed BONE FIDE JOB REQUIREMENTS Current Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector clearance, with results acceptable to ALIB. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Fixed Term Position starting October 5, 2026 and ending April 2, 2027 Wage offered will be $20.00 per hour Hours per week: up to 60 hours biweekly (max 30 hrs./week) Competition closes September 27, 2026 at midnight, Pacific Time.
