As a member of the Community Planning and Housing team, you will play a pivotal role in helping to bring growth and prosperity to Saint John. This position is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or planner wanting experience in a variety of planning roles. This position is a valued member of the City’s Development & Quality of Life Department which supports Saint John achieve its long-term vision of sustainable growth and a diverse, vibrant, resilient community. This position ensures exemplary service to our customers (both public and internal) and supports the Community Planning and Housing team in the effective delivery of long-range planning, development approvals, affordable housing, neighborhood development, heritage development, arts and culture, amongst others. Key Responsibilities Support the achievement of the City of Saint John’s innovative municipal plan implementation and provide strategic policy advice on a variety of planning related matters as well support towards development approvals. Champion innovative planning in the community and bring a commitment to smart growth principles and a solid track record of successful engagement with community partners. Support policy development within the Development & Quality of Life area, inclusive of the following focus areas: land-use planning, housing, growth, infrastructure, transportation, sustainability, neighborhoods, heritage and urban design, and parks and recreation. Support delivery of the Department’s development approvals program, which facilitates customer service excellence and continuous improvement on behalf of the City’s One Stop Development Shop. Play a supportive role in the development, implementation and ongoing monitoring of the City of Saint John’s community and economic growth efforts, including our efforts to become the most welcoming City in Atlantic Canada. Enhance the Service Area’s evidence-based decision-making, through the development, dissemination, analysis and reporting of quantitative and qualitative research, including within the areas of: statistics, demographic analysis, financial and budget analysis, valuation. You will be an effective communicator and collaborator to build strong working relationships with key community stakeholders including the development community, citizens, the Planning Advisory Committee, the Growth Committee and Common Council. Essential Qualifications A university degree in Community Planning or a related discipline is required, preferably at the graduate level. Membership, or in-progress RPP/LPP certification, in the Canadian Institute of Planners is required. A minimum of 2 years professional planning experience. Candidates who are recent graduates or with reduced experience will be considered at a developmental level. The successful applicant may be eligible to participate in a Flexible Time Options Program which includes the option of working a 4 or 5-day work week, subject to business requirements.
