Job Title: Custodian Reports to: Manager of Facilities Location: St. John’s Employment Type: Relief (Call In) Hours: Relief coverage for 12-hour day and evening shifts, including weekends (8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.). Pay Rate: $21.25 per hour Position Summary The Custodian plays a critical role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for Guests, staff, and volunteers at The Gathering Place. Working across multiple sites, including the Main Building and Mercy House, the Custodian ensures that all areas are sanitized according to a documented cleaning plan. This position contributes directly to the health and dignity of those we serve and supports the overall functioning of our programs by upholding high standards of cleanliness and workplace safety. Key Responsibilities Maintain a sanitary and safe environment by following established cleaning schedules, procedures, and safety protocols across all areas of operation. Use cleaning and disinfecting products responsibly, demonstrating knowledge of WHMIS guidelines and proper handling of hazardous materials. Complete cleaning tasks in accordance with a documented cleaning plan, ensuring that all designated areas and high-touch surfaces are regularly cleaned and recorded. Safely operate and maintain custodial equipment and supplies, report any malfunctioning or damaged items, and ensure proper storage of materials and tools. Replenish stock such as paper products, soap, and cleaning materials throughout the building as needed. Keep carts and workspaces organized and ready for use, ensuring supplies are well-stocked and accessible. Maintain a respectful and professional presence in shared spaces, particularly when interacting with Guests, and uphold boundaries while demonstrating kindness and discretion. Perform general cleaning tasks and any other custodial duties as directed by the Manager of Facilities or designate. Demonstrate flexibility by adapting to shift coverage needs including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Follow all health and safety guidelines and contribute to a clean and supportive environment aligned with The Gathering Place’s mission and values. Qualifications & Skills WHMIS training or knowledge of chemical safety and infection control procedures is considered an asset. Proven experience in custodial, janitorial, or housekeeping roles, preferably in institutional or community settings. Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision and maintain accountability for assigned duties. Comfortable performing physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 lbs and standing for extended periods. Demonstrated dependability, time management, and organizational skills. Ability to work collaboratively or independently in a busy, client-centered environment. Strong understanding of and sensitivity to working in a setting that serves vulnerable populations. Clear Record of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check required. Equivalencies in education and experience will be considered. CLOSING DATE: September 28, 2026 (2026CST007)
