The MHSc in Bioethics is a two-year professional Master’s degree program. Its students are early and mid-career professionals who work in healthcare, public health or other health-related settings. The MHSc in Bioethics has a hybrid program format with both in-person and online components. CHL 3007H is a hybrid course with the in-person component conducted during a Residency Week in January at the University of Toronto on the St. George Campus and the online component conducted during eight 2.5-hr synchronous online seminar sessions scheduled through the Winter Term (see Schedule below). CHL3007H introduces students to key topics in health priority setting (resource allocation) from both theoretical and practical viewpoints. The goal is for students to develop an understanding of key concepts, issues, and approaches related to priority setting in health systems and institutions from an interdisciplinary ethics perspective. Case studies will be a constitutive component of each session, some of which will be contributed by the co-instructors and guest faculty and many of which we hope and anticipate will be contributed by students through class discussion based on their professional, disciplinary, and personal experiences and expertise. CHL3007H has a hybrid format with both in-person and online components. The in-person component is conducted as a workshop on the UofT campus during the MHSc in Bioethics Residency Week and the online component is conducted synchronously during six seminar sessions throughout the term. Course Learning Objectives: by the end of the course, students will be able to: Describe and distinguish different theories of justice related to priority setting and resource allocation in health institutions and systems Examine priority setting/resource allocation problems from both theoretical and practical viewpoints Appreciate the contributions and interactions of interdisciplinary methods in analyzing priority setting/resource allocation problems Apply ethical reasoning to address priority setting/resource allocation problems in practice Estimated course enrolment: 15 Estimated TA support: n/a Class Schedule: In-Person: MHSc Residency Week – January 22 (8:30am-5:00pm) Online: Seminar Sessions – Tuesday, 9-11:30 am on Jan 12, Feb 2 & 23, March 9 & 23 and April 6 Online: Asynchronous Session – 2hrs TBD Sessional dates: January to April 2027 Salary: $9,997.47 (Sessional Lecturer I) $10,699.21 (Sessional Lecturer I Long Term) $10,699.21 (Sessional Lecturer II) $10,953.96 (Sessional Lecturer II Long Term) $10,953.96 (Sessional Lecturer III) $11,228.90 (Sessional Lecturer III Long Term) (Salary inclusive of 4% or 6% vacation pay, where applicable) Please note that should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. Minimum Qualifications: Graduate degree in Bioethics or a related discipline. Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of resource allocation, including ethical, legal, regulatory, and professional aspects in the Canadian context. Experience teaching bioethics courses at the graduate level required. Preferred Qualifications (If any): Experience teaching health professional learners an asset. Professional experience working in healthcare settings with respect to resource allocation issues strongly preferred. Description of duties: All normal duties related to teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments; calculation and submission of grades; maintaining regular communication with students. As well as normal teaching duties, the course instructor will monitor student progress; maintain the course Quercus page; attend MHSc program meetings; and maintain regular contact with the MHSc Program Director.
