In Canada, CNOOC International has oil sands assets in Long Lake, located in northern Alberta just south of Fort McMurray, which is a SAGD and partial Upgrader operation with production capacity of 85,000 barrels of bitumen a day. We also have interest in several other oil sands projects, including Hangingstone, operated by Greenfire Resources Operating Corporation and Syncrude’s oil sands mining upgrading facility. In addition to our oil sands business, we have shale gas land in Northeast British Columbia, a power station in Balzac, Alberta, and interest in a wind farm in southern Alberta. Calgary is our regional corporate office for all North America.

This position is an 12 months contractor role inCalgary, Alberta; the successful candidate will be onboarded through a third party contracting agency.

Your Background

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Science, or its equivalent, and professional registration with APEGA or eligibility acceptable.

• Minimum 15 years Civil and Structural Engineering design experience with an Alberta Oil & Gas Industry Production Company or Engineering Company, including Construction support.

• Demonstrated examples of creativity and innovation in addressing engineering design challenges.

• Sound knowledge and experience in all aspects of civil and structural engineering, including:

  • earthwork,
  • structural steel,
  • concrete,
  • buildings and foundations (shallow, concrete pile, driven steel pile, and helical pile).

• Ability to understand and interpret Geotechnical concepts and data as outlined in Reports provided by Geotechnical Engineers.

• Experience in development of Technical Standards and Specifications.

• Ability to work with Engineering and Construction Contractors, managing civil/structural scope within projects.

• Recognized within the E&C department for technical expertise.

• Highly effective relationship builder at all levels, internally and externally.

• Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills and strong organizational skills with the ability to work in a flexible team environment.

• Ability to work independently and on a team by effectively handling cultural, political and economic differences.

Your Role with Our Team

• Technical Leadership and Engineering Assurance: Provide senior CSA engineering leadership and expertise across projects and operations, ensuring designs and deliverables meet CNOOC standards, applicable codes, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices throughout the project lifecycle.
• Multidisciplinary and Stakeholder Support: Support multidisciplinary engineering teams, within the E&C business unit, and project teams within a matrix organization by offering technical guidance, resolving complex CSA issues, reviewing 3rd party engineering contractor work, and contributing to effective decision-making.
• Project Execution and Risk Management: Contribute to the successful execution of capital and sustaining projects by supporting CSA scope development, cost and schedule alignment, risk identification and mitigation, and continuous improvement of engineering processes to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective outcomes.
• Evaluate engineering issues and make recommendations regarding solutions. Mentor lesser-experienced professionals in development of innovative options.
• Requires application of mature engineering knowledge in planning and conducting CSA engineering tasks having scope for independent accomplishment and coordination of complex assignments.
• Works at an advanced technical level, participates in planning by providing original approaches to practical and economical solutions.
• Originates and presents complete and final reports on own technical studies reflecting a high degree of originality.
• May act as a subject matter expert within the CSA Engineering space, requiring presentation of reports, recommendations and interpretations of findings.
• Works collaboratively and communicates clearly with team members to achieve key results.
• Make responsible decisions regarding technical reviews on maters assigned.
• Advice on technical problems, reviews contractor work for technical accuracy, practicality and adequacy.
