Position Details: Full Time, Vacant Position, 1 Year Term Starting Salary: $54,300 based on a 35-hour work week and commensurate with individual education and experience, as it relates to the position. Location: Hybrid at the DUC head office located at Oak Hammock Marsh near Stonewall, MB Closing Deadline: July 31, 2026 (11:59PM ET)

What You Will Do

Reporting to a Research Scientist, the Biologist will conduct applied conservation research in biodiversity, wetland ecology, and related fields aligned with the conservation mission of DUC and the objectives of the Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research (IWWR). The Biologist will assist in the analysis, publication, and communication of research results and contribute scientific support to DUC’s Conservation, Education, Fundraising, Policy, and Marketing and Communications teams. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to research that informs habitat conservation, restoration, and conservation planning across Canada.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Under the leadership of a Research Scientist, conduct research activities related to biodiversity, wetland ecology, and conservation science. This will mainly include office-based activities but could also include field-based research including data collection, management of research equipment and supplies, coordination of field activities, and occasional supervision of field crews, students, volunteers, or other project personnel.
  • Manage, analyze, interpret, and archive ecological and geospatial data.
  • Contribute to scientific manuscripts and technical reports.
  • Collaborate with researchers, conservation practitioners, landowners, government agencies, and other partners to advance DUC's conservation objectives.
  • Provide scientific and technical support to DUC conservation programs and initiatives.
  • Develop and deliver science communication and outreach content, including presentations, popular articles, videos, educational materials, and other products that communicate research findings and support DUC's conservation objectives.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in ecology, wildlife biology, environmental science, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant work experience in ecology, wildlife biology, environmental science, conservation, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS or an equivalent GIS platform.
  • Experience conducting field research or monitoring, including project coordination, data collection, management of multiple priorities, and working outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.

Assets

  • M.Sc. in ecology, wildlife biology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with ecological data management, statistical analysis, ecological modelling, and visualization using R or similar software.
  • Experience contributing to scientific publications, technical reports, or other science communication products.
  • Experience working on collaborative, multi-investigator scientific teams.
  • Experience supervising field crews, technicians, students, or volunteers.
  • Bilingualism (English and French).
