Position Purpose: Reporting to the Supervisor of Volunteering & Engagement, this position will research, write, source visual assets, and test and evaluate content for on-site interpretive signage and other educational activities and resources. This position will also assist in creating other resources and learning experiences for a variety of audiences. This position will also assist and provide support in implementing the approved Strategic Plan, as well as ensuring our Zoo is accreditation-ready for the Association of Zoos & Aquariums standards.

Core Role Responsibilities:

• Research, write, test, and evaluate interpretive copy for on-site signage and other educational activities and resources.
• Source accurate visual assets (e.g. photographs, illustrations) for use on interpretive signs and other resources.
• Assist in evaluating current and new interpretive signage and other educational activities, experiences, and resources.
• Assist in creating other resources and learning experiences for a variety of audiences.
• Assist in the co-ordination of new programs or projects as required.
• Assist in the production of educational materials / resources as required.
• Follows all Standard Operating Procedures
• Attends appropriate training courses as required.
• Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

• Completion of post-secondary education (College/University), preferably in the biology, museum studies, and/or education fields.
• Certifications or post-secondary level courses in interpretation, interpretive writing, copy editing/proof-reading, and/or visitor research a definite asset.
• A minimum of one (1) year previous related experience.
• Proven highly developed interpretive writing skills to allow for the preparation of signage, resource materials, training materials, articles / newsletters, correspondence, and concise but accurate reports.
• Experience delivering interpretive programs an asset.
• Must possess proven leadership, team building, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
• Proven ability to organize projects from inception to final presentation, with attention to detail.
• Must be able to communicate effectively and accurately both orally and in writing.
• Proven ability to perform and present accurate research on a variety of topics.
• Must possess strong working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, database software, Internet browsers.
• Must have working knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Information System (WHMIS) legislation, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Toronto Zoo Safety.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish tasks.
• Capable of maintaining accurate, up to date, and comprehensive records.
• Knowledge of the Toronto Zoo and its exhibits an asset.
• Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to environmental practices.
• Demonstrated knowledge of plants/animals/conservation issues, and the ability to pass this information on to others is an asset.
• Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
• Possession of an unrestricted Class G driver's license valid in the Province of Ontario, along with a good driving record (an asset).
