Course Description: This course introduces the Zen Buddhist traditions of China, Korea, and Japan. Emphasis is placed on the radical views of history, language, ritual, self, and enlightenment espoused by these traditions. The course also examines issues related to Zen monasticism, the development of koans, and the definition of orthodoxy in both premodern and modern Zen. Students will be asked to explore these and other topics by paying close attention to the historical, doctrinal, and institutional contexts from which they arose.   Estimated course enrolment: 60 students   Estimated TA support: N/A   Class schedule: In-person lectures Mondays 11:00-13:00   Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2027 – April 30, 2027   Salary: Sessional Lecturer I - $$9,997.48Sessional Lecturer I (Long Term) - $10,699.22Sessional Lecturer II - $10,699.22Sessional Lecturer II (Long Term) - $10,953.96Sessional Lecturer III - $10,953.96Sessional Lecturers III (Long Term) - $11,228.90     Please note that should the rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from the rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.   Minimum qualifications: Completed MA in areas related to the course required or equivalent education combined with teaching experience; ability to clearly communicate information required; willingness to replicate the pedagogy and evaluation techniques employed in the regular teaching of this course required;   Preferred qualifications: Ph.D. in areas related to the course preferred; experience in language teaching at the university level preferred with evidence of superior teaching evaluations.   Description of duties: Preparing lesson plans and lectures; delivering lectures; developing and administering grading, course assignments, tests, and exams; providing scheduled office hours for academic counselling of students;   Application instructions: Applicants must submit a detailed letter of application; an updated curriculum vitae; evidence of teaching in the relevant area, including student evaluations if available; and the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 application form located here: https://uoft.me/CUPE-3902-Unit-3-Application-Form, by email with the subject line “Sessional Lecturer Application” to: eas.undergrad@utoronto.ca.
