KEY FUNCTION: Provide efficient and confidential scheduling support to the department, while ensuring day to day clerical work is carried out. Interact with patients and other health care workers to ensure the needs of the patient are met in a caring and professional manner and provide clerical services in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Laboratory and the Vision and Mission of HSN. REPORTING: Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Laboratory DUTIES:
Answer and screen calls, relay messages and respond to all inquiries. Sort and distribute mail; process correspondence. Sort, duplicate, distribute and file Laboratory reports. Enter specimens and laboratory orders and validate information matches information on requisitions. Transcribe draft reference/pathology reports for approval and verification as required. Initiate scheduling changes and sick replacement as directed by Laboratory Managers. Ensure schedules are updated to reflect current staffing levels. Enter Payroll information into Meditech. Monitor supplies for expiry dates to ensure proper stock rotation. Assist with updating and reviewing policies and procedures. Protect the confidentiality of patient information in accordance with existing legislation and hospital policies. Perform all duties in compliance with current legislation and policies and procedures of HSN. Follow Quality Assurance policies and procedures and participate in quality assurance initiatives as required. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines. Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required. Participate in hospital training as required. Assist with improvement initiatives as required. Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Minimum of a Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent (i.e. General Education Development (GED) or Academic and Career Entrance (ACE)). Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum six (6) months recent relevant experience is required.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency in Medical Terminology. Demonstrated ability to type a minimum of 50 w.p.m. Demonstrated proficiency in data entry. Demonstrated computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, and Outlook) and applicable patient information systems. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with patients, families, and healthcare workers. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks. Demonstrated compliance with HSN’s privacy policy. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
