Location - This role is in-person at North Campus and South Campus, Edmonton.
Position Summary
Join the Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) under the leadership of Dr. Gurcharn Brar. We are looking for a highly motivated professional to bridge the gap between our field operations and molecular research. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys the balance of high-tech lab work, complex data analysis, and the hands-on nature of field crop husbandry.
The Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences is a leader in teaching, research, and community engagement across diverse fields including food systems, sustainable resource management, human ecology, and environmental sociology. With more than 500 faculty and staff, over 1,500 undergraduates, and 600 graduate students, the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences leverages 25,000 acres of research land across Alberta to deliver high-impact academic programs and applied research in partnership with industry and communities.
As a key member of the CBL, your work will span three primary environments:
- Molecular Breeding & Lab Operations
- Marker Development: Screen breeding material using molecular markers and assist in the development and validation of markers for wheat cultivars.
- Data Translation: Analyze marker data and translate complex results into "breeder-friendly" formats to guide selection decisions.
- Field Research & Crop Husbandry
- Trial Management: Assist the technical team with field trial preparation, seed processing, and general crop husbandry.
- Phenotyping: Assist with field data collection, specifically managing disease nurseries and ensuring rigorous quality control.
- Harvest Analytics: Perform agronomic measurements on harvested samples during peak seasonal windows.
- Data Science & Outreach
- Statistical Analysis: Utilize R (or similar software) to analyze large datasets using split-plot and augmented experimental designs.
- Community Engagement: Collaborate with the PI and staff to organize field research days and industry events.
Education & Experience
Minimum: MSc in Agriculture, Plant Science, or Agronomy. MSc specializing in Plant Breeding is preferred.
Experience: At least 3 years of experience in field crop production and husbandry.
Technical Skills
Genetics: Practical knowledge of molecular markers within a plant breeding context.
Breeding Knowledge: Familiarity with breeding methods, pedigree maintenance, and field experimental designs.
Data Science: Proficiency in managing large datasets and performing statistical analyses (R experience is highly preferred).
Equipment: Familiarity with agricultural equipment is a strong asset.
Leadership & Logistics
Proven ability to work effectively within a team of 5+ staff members.
Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s license.
