Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.

The Assistant Managers of Food Services are currently seeking a Temporary Full Time Cook. The purpose of the position is to prepare meals in an institutional kitchen, ensuring meals are prepared to standards and delivered to the beltline and that cleanliness and safety are maintained. To prepare meals for retail business including the cafeteria, canteens and for catering events requiring specialty products and displays and where incumbents are given some latitude for creativity in preparation of these products.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Preparing a variety of meals for patients, staff cafeteria and patient canteens including special diets, salads, sandwiches and desserts through standard volume cooking methods or re-thermalizing out-sourced products; ensuring quality and quantity of food items (issued from Ingredient Control) by checking items prior to storing in appropriate areas; following standardized recipes and daily production sheets from the CBORD System and reporting any discrepancies to the Food Service Supervisor.
  • Ensuring meal items (e.g. salad plates, sandwiches) are properly presented, punctually served to the beltline and that they conform to portion control, temperature standards, and HACCP Guidelines.
  • Prepares and serves food to catering events.
  • Ensuring safety of kitchen equipment and work area; security of knives (regular knife counts), temperature standards of fridges/freezers and advising supervisor of equipment needing repair or replacement.
  • Ensuring that standards of cleanliness and hygiene are maintained by cleaning and/or sanitizing kitchen counters, sinks, equipment and work area before and after use.
  • Utilizing a variety of equipment and ovens, such as the Rational Oven, Alto-Sham Oven, Robot Coupe mixer, food processors and slicers.
  • Managers have the right to assign additional duties and schedule alternate work locations based on operational requirements.
  • Performs all work at all times in compliance with all hospital policies and procedures, legislation (Occupational Health & Safety Act, Fire Code, WHMIS, etc) relevant to health and safety, security and potential risk hazards.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must hold an Ontario Certificate of Qualifications in the trade of Journeyperson Cook – 415 A Red Seal – Required
  • Experience with large volume cooking/baking procedures and methods, Health Canada Food Service Guidelines (Canada’s Food Guide) and Dietitians of Canada Guidelines for diet therapy to prepare a variety of foods, volume meals and special diets and textured diets.
  • Experience with Kitchen equipment and tools to prepare food and meals.
  • Results oriented work ethic to work independently and undertake tasks needed to accomplish work objectives and deliver quality, consistent and timely results.
  • Demonstrated leadership, conflict resolution, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to adapt readily to change and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude
  • Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation)
  • Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills.
