Job Description

The Maintenance Summer Student safety and efficiently assists trades people in the performance of their work in any way needed to complete the tasks quickly and efficiently. The incumbent may also be assigned to work independently on tasks or on various pieces of equipment within their scope of skills and knowledge. All work performed is to be in accordance with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and permitting requirements. Typical support to the maintenance team includes:

  • Facility Site Maintenance (Lawn mowing, Weed Trimming, Painting, and cleaning)
  • Helping Trades or Operations workers as assigned (job prep/cleaning, material handling, and labour support).

This position operates within a COR, ISO 17025 certified, and OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 conforming plant environment and is expected to comply with all regulatory requirements. The facility operates on a 24/7 basis.

The duties of the Maintenance Summer Student are as follows, but not limited to:

  • Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace. Complies with all health and safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company’s, Client’s and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements.

  • Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, staff of other company departments, and client representatives. Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment.

  • Promotes a quality first work ethic and attitude to provide a product that is manufactured of the highest standard achievable.

  • Safely operates company owned, leased, managed, or rented vehicles and/or mobile equipment.

  • Manages assigned tasks/projects within scope of responsibility so all KPIs are achieved, including but not limited to safety, productivity, and product quality.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Experiences:

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude would be a definite asset.
  • Strong customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results.
  • Attentiveness to details and ability to manage a diverse workload.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Organizational and creative-problem solving skills.
  • Basic level computer skills to operate Google Office Suite.
  • Ability and willingness to work assigned shifts and overtime as scheduled.

  1. Equipment and Tools Used:
  • Standard office equipment.
  • Standard shop equipment and tools.
  • Mobile equipment including lawn mowers and onsite vehicles.
  • Regularly operates company owned, leased or rented vehicles and/or mobile equipment.
  1. Physical or mental demands and activities:
  • Incumbent performs Safety Sensitive duties or responsibilities.
  • Continually managing priorities to meet operational objectives
  • Achieving expected performance standards while maintaining an efficient and safe working environment.
  1. It is assumed that all reasonable and legal Occupational Health & Safety practices are in place and are adhered to. In addition, PPE is to be worn as per company standards and procedures. Refer to the safety section and safe work plan sections of procedures for specific information. Refer to the position’s Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for the correlation or activity, risk, and controls.
  • Works directly in Plant; required to climb ladders, work at heights or in confined spaces, and be exposed to various industrial hazards such as but not limited to noise, fumes, and chemicals and hazardous waste.
  • Exposed to PCBs, Compressed/flammable gas, mobile equipment, moving equipment, rotating equipment and electrical hazards.
  • Exposed to hot and cold working environments.
  • Required to wear respirator and/or breathing apparatus while in designated areas of the plant and/or laboratory.
  • Periodically required to do heavy lifting and carrying.

Hours of Work: (The hours during which duties are being performed and Incumbent is expected to work to meet operational requirements.)

This position is eligible to participate in a Compressed Work Week Schedule, thereby working four, ten-hour days each week. To ensure operational requirements and coverage is achieved at all times, incumbent may be requested to occasionally change/adapt their hours. Options within the Compressed Work Week Guidelines are Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday and 6:00 am to 4:30 pm or 7:00 am to 5:30 pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Position is based on a 40-hour work week. With prior approval, incumbent has flexibility to adapt hours to meet business and personal needs.
