Director of Care
About the role
Inaugural Director of Care — Design the Clinical Model from the Ground Up Neshama Hospice | Toronto, Ontario
Full-Time | On-Site Build the Team. Shape the Culture. Open the Doors. Neshama Hospice is opening Canada's first hospice residence built on Jewish values, open to all — and we're looking for the nurse-leader who will build its clinical program from the ground up. This is not a role where you'll inherit a team, a workflow, or a culture. You'll create them. If you've ever thought “This is how I'd do things if I could start from scratch” — this is that chance.
What You'll Be Doing • Design the nursing and care delivery model for a first-of-its-kind residence — the frameworks other Ontario hospices will study. • Build clinical policies, workflows, staffing structures, and IPAC protocols before a single resident arrives. • Recruit and mentor an interdisciplinary team of RNs, RPNs, PSWs, and allied health from day one. • Run a 24/7 clinical staffing model, admissions and resident flow, and clinical quality and risk management. • Partner directly with the Executive Director on operational planning, budget, and workforce strategy — this is a seat at the leadership table.
Is This You? This role is a strong fit if you: • Have hands-on hospice or palliative care experience — you've sat at bedsides, led families through the hardest weeks of their lives, and you know this work is different from acute or long-term care. • Have led a clinical team, not just delivered clinical care — staffing, scheduling, coaching, performance. • Get energy from ambiguity — this is start-up culture; you’ll be building policies and systems where none exist yet. • Want ownership of outcomes rather than execution of an existing playbook.
This role is not the right fit if you: • Are looking for an established program with existing staff, systems, and SOPs already in place. • Prefer clearly defined day-to-day duties over shaping the role as you go.
What You Bring Required: • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. • 3+ years in healthcare leadership with direct staff supervision. • 3+ years of direct clinical experience specifically in hospice or palliative care. • Proven track record managing staffing, scheduling, and operations in a 24/7 care environment. • Valid driver's licence, access to a vehicle, and a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Strong assets: • Palliative care certification (e.g., CAPCE) or equivalent. • Health and Safety Certification. • Comfort with EMR systems and scheduling software; experience selecting or implementing an EMR is a plus. • Experience with IPAC, quality improvement, and accreditation readiness.
Why Neshama We're building a first-of-its-kind 12-bed home in North York where residents and families are true partners in care, and where a collaborative team model means wisdom flows in every direction. You'll work alongside a Medical Director and Executive Director who see this role as core leadership, collaborate with your leadership peers, be backed by a passionate Board, committed donors, and a community that has rallied to make this vision a reality.
The systems you design in your first year will shape how we care for thousands of families for decades. We're looking for the person who reads that sentence and feels compelled, excited and honoured by the task at hand.
