Position Summary
Nodin Mental Health Services, a department of the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA), supports the mental health and well-being of First Nation individuals and communities. Nodin provides a wide range of services for children, youth, adults, and families, including intake, a social emergency response service, an outpatient mental health service, art therapy, psychology, school-based counselling, travelling counsellors, and mobile outreach service.
The Student – Mental Health (Outreach Services) supports Nodin’s Outreach Services, which include the travelling counsellors, school-based counsellors, and mobile outreach service. The student will work within a culturally safe, client-centered environment and requires strong administrative and interpersonal skills, cultural awareness, and a commitment to trauma-informed, respectful service. The role will contribute to a range of outreach and program activities within community and team settings, including the Kiiwe Minoyaawin Family Camp.
Accountability
The Student – Mental Health (Outreach Services) reports to the Supervisor – Clinical, Outreach Services.
Qualifications
Education & Training
- Currently enrolled in, or working toward, post-secondary education in Social Work, Psychology, Child and Youth Care, Indigenous Studies, or a related discipline
- Demonstrated interest in mental health, wellness, and community-based support services
Cultural Knowledge & Competence
- Foundational knowledge of Indigenous histories, cultures, and the ongoing impacts of colonization, including intergenerational trauma
- Demonstrated understanding of and ability to work effectively with culturally diverse populations, particularly First Nations communities
- Knowledge of First Nations peoples’ health priorities, social issues, and community contexts
- Knowledge of local Indigenous communities, languages, and cultural practices is considered an asset
- Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects in the Sioux Lookout Zone is an asset
Interpersonal & Communication Skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and professionalism
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of an organization

- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities

Technical & Administrative Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general administrative tasks, including email and calendar management
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to community sites, as required

Roles & Responsibilities
Program & Outreach Support
- Support the Mobile Outreach Service team with program planning, coordination, implementation, and follow-up
- Assist in the planning and delivery of the Kiiwe Minoyaawin Camp, including cultural, land-based, and wellness-focused activities
- Provide general support to Nodin Mental Health Services’ programming initiatives
Administrative Support
- Assist with scheduling, coordination, and documentation of outreach activities
- Support data entry, file organization, and maintenance of accurate service records
- Prepare materials and resources for community visits, presentations, and service delivery
Learning & Skill Development (Non-Clinical)
- Shadow mental health staff to gain exposure to outreach, engagement, and client support practices
- Develop foundational knowledge in case management, service coordination, and community-based care
- Learn about mental health systems, referral pathways, and available community-based supports
Client Support & Advocacy
- Support staff in prioritizing client safety, well-being, and dignity
- Assist with client navigation (e.g., connecting individuals to services, supporting basic needs coordination) under supervision
- Contribute to a respectful, welcoming, and culturally safe environment for clients, families, and community members
Team Collaboration
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to support learning and collaboration
- Contribute to a positive team environment aligned with SLFNHA values
