This competition is limited to current NAIT staff within the School of Health and Life Sciences. Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Senior Veterinary Medical Officer is a critical role in assuring medical, clinical, and operational competence in the delivery of veterinary services at NAIT. The purpose of this role is to provide assurances that the NAIT Veterinary Medical Clinic is in compliance with legislative, regulatory and professional competency requirements. The Senior Veterinary Medical Officer is the senior veterinarian in the provision of all animal health services. As the Senior Veterinarian, this role is ultimately accountable for the safe and appropriate provision of veterinary medical care. Accordingly, the Senior Veterinary Medical Officer is responsible to set and maintain an infrastructure of contained and delegated medical functions to assure the provision of safe, effective and appropriate medical care. To carry out this mandate, the Senior Veterinary Medical Officer assures that a total quality management system is in place. Examples of a total quality management system for medical providers include: a sound veterinarian credentialing process and medical staff by-laws; assuring clinical practice compliance from veterinarian providers and allied clinical staff; creates and maintains delegated medical functions through clinical practice guidelines; establishes quality assurance mechanisms; creates and maintains a ‘standing orders’ framework (policy & practice); assures that protection and prevention practices and measures are in place; and assures that reporting processes are in place for regulatory compliance. Ultimately, the Senior Veterinary Medical Officer assures that the facility’s mandate is safely and effectively delivered through qualified professions and in a safe environment for staff and patients alike. Key Responsibilities: The Senior Veterinary Medical Officer has several paramount responsibilities to assure overall quality, safety and competent medical practice and these are mandated through legislative instruments, regulatory regimes and professional scope of practice parameters. For example, this position has legal authority over all the Standard Operating Procedures (large and small animal) and protocols at the NAIT animal clinics as required by the Veterinary Professional Act of Alberta. As well, this position provides medical direction to staff and adjunct Veterinarians. Other duties as assigned. This position will also maintain an assigned teaching load. Skills and Abilities: Excellent communicator (written and oral) with superior customer service and conflict resolution skills. Excellent teamwork skills. Liase with the NAIT Animal Care Committee, as required. Qualifications: Must be a registered DVM with an unrestricted permit with ABVMA Previous leadership/supervisory experience is preferred. Able to maintain ethical and positional boundaries Classification – Leader II - Chair This assignment is covered by the NAIT Academic Staff Association (NASA) Collective Agreement. Remuneration Refer to Leader II salary range below; As outlined in the NASA Collective Agreement.
