About the role

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Position title: Events Associate (AMS Events)

Reports to: Assistant Manager, AMS Events

Employee status: Full time, hourly, temporary

Hours: Up to 30 hours per week (with opportunity for more during event weeks)

Compensation: $19.00 per hour

Length of term: June 1, 2026 – August 31, 2026

JOB DESCRIPTION

Attention all fun-loving UBC Vancouver students! Do you have a passion for campus culture and event planning? If so, the Alma Mater Society (AMS) of UBC has the perfect opportunity for you. Join the AMS Events team as an AMS Events Associate. As an Event Associate, you’ll work closely with the Assistant Manager, AMS Events, to help plan, promote and execute engaging events that cater to the diverse interests of UBC students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support in planning, developing, implementing, and executing a wide range of exciting events throughout the academic year.
  • Interface directly with UBC students through in-person opportunities, engaging with them, and promoting upcoming AMS events.
  • Stay up to date with the current and ever-changing interests of UBC students and help bring relevant programming to life.
  • Collaborate with student clubs and campus groups to create inclusive, representative, and memorable events.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships both within and outside the organization.
  • Support the marketing team by contributing creative ideas, brainstorming campaigns, and developing concept directions for the marketing team to consider.
  • Deliver top-notch customer service for UBC students and our partners.
  • Contribute to fostering a responsive, respectful, and positive environment.
  • Active participation in weekly planning meetings.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Candidates must meet Canada Summer Jobs program requirements:
  • Be aged between 15 and 30 years old on the start date of the job
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • This includes having a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Must be currently enrolled as a UBC student
  • Some prior event planning experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of the current interests of post-secondary students
  • Familiar with UBC student life and campus culture
  • Outgoing, friendly, and adaptable to various environments
  • Capable of working in a live music setting
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and produce results within a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong knowledge of social media applications
  • Able to work in-person at UBC Vancouver campus throughout work term
  • Flexible schedule, open to working some weekdays between 9am-5pm, as well as occasional late evening shifts and longer hours for event implementation
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively within a team setting
  • Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to changing circumstances
  • Able to follow directions and respond well to feedback
  • Photography, videography and/or graphic design experience is an asset but not required
