WINTER PATROLLER

One (1) Seasonal Position

Union – CUPE

The Township of Springwater, located in the heart of Simcoe County, is a mixed urban/rural municipality with growing urban settlements and a prosperous agricultural sector. The municipality is currently recruiting for one (1) existing seasonal position of Winter Patroller to work from mid-November 2026 to mid-April 2027.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Roads, the Winter Patroller will supplement the winter patrol operations of the department and will be responsible for the patrol of Township roads, all related electronic record keeping and providing a wide range of support functions in the Public Works Department.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The key responsibilities of the position are:

  • Patrolling, inspecting, collecting and recording data electronically;
  • Performing safety inspections and keeping accurate truck records;
  • Assisting work crews in a winter road maintenance work environment;
  • Calling out staff as required by conditions;
  • Assisting emergency services when required with road closures; and
  • Carrying out such other roads related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma or excellent knowledge of snow removal equipment and processes learned from post-secondary courses and / or practical experience.
  • Minimum of 2 to 5 years direct winter snow removal experience preferred.
  • A Valid Class G driver’s license in good standing with a satisfactory driving record; Class DZ is preferred.
  • Good interpersonal, public relations, communication, time management, and record-keeping skills are a necessity.
  • Ability to perform manual labour and tasks in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of manual and power equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and Minimum Maintenance Standards (MMS) is required.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manuals for road signage.
  • Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 training for traffic control measures.
  • Proficiency with the use of computers including word-processing, spreadsheets, email, document management and Internet is essential.
  • Knowledge of Citywide work order and patrol module software and patrolling practices preferred.
  • Ability to work night shift, extended hours as required and in inclement weather/road conditions during weekends and statutory holidays.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must submit a Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the Township.

RATE OF PAY

Compensation for this position is $32.42 per hour (2026 rate), plus statutory holidays and vacation pay as per the Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK

From mid-November 2026 to mid-April 2027, this seasonal position will work 34 hours per week scheduled from Thursday evening to noon on Sunday. Shifts will typically be from 9:00 pm to 7:30 am on Thursday evening to Friday morning and from 12:00 am (midnight) to 12:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Extended hours and additional hours in inclement weather/road conditions may be required. This position will also be required to provide coverage for statutory holidays and absences in accordance with the Collective Agreement. Overtime is mandatory to address significant weather or infrastructure issues.
