About the role
Energy Impact & Data Operations Analyst Intern — Canada Powertrust | Vancouver, BC (Hybrid) | 6 Month Contract About Powertrust Powertrust is unlocking a new sector of clean energy by aggregating Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from small, distributed renewable energy (DRE) projects around the world. We believe that small projects — aggregated to meaningful scale — can transform the world's energy future by delivering social and climate impacts where it matters most. Small DRE projects are faster to deploy, more agile, more resilient, and support verifiable social co-benefits — helping power schools, hospitals, factories, farms, and households across the Global South.
Powertrust offers a unique, innovative model for corporate climate leaders to decarbonize their global energy footprint while maximizing the impact of their investments. We are looking for a proactive Energy Impact & Data Operations Analyst Intern to join our growing analytics team. This position is based in Canada, with a strong preference for candidates in the Greater Vancouver area. Role Overview As an Energy Impact & Data Operations Analyst Intern, you will work alongside our Data Scientist and Operations team to transform renewable energy generation data into actionable insights, support REC issuance workflows, and help streamline data operations using modern agentic AI tools. This is a hands-on role at the intersection of data analytics, climate impact, and clean energy operations. Key Responsibilities Data Analysis & Portfolio Reporting Work directly with the data scientist to analyze solar generation data across the Powertrust portfolio and produce regular performance reports for internal and client-facing use. Design and maintain dashboards using Looker Studio, Google Data Studio, or similar BI tools to visualize project KPIs, energy generation trends, and environmental impact metrics. Generate recurring and ad-hoc analyses to support client reporting and internal decision-making. Data Quality & Anomaly Detection Identify generation data gaps, missing intervals, and operational anomalies across the Powertrust portfolio of distributed solar projects. Assist with quality assurance and validation of project performance data, flagging issues for investigation and resolution. REC Issuance Support Support the operations team in gathering, organizing, and validating the generation and project metadata data required to issue Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) through registry platforms. Ensure data completeness and accuracy against issuance requirements, helping maintain audit-ready records. AI-Assisted Data Operations Leverage agentic AI tools to streamline end-to-end solar project metadata and generation data management — from ingestion and cleaning through reporting and issuance. Identify opportunities to automate repetitive data workflows and document processes for team-wide adoption. Additional Responsibilities Collaborate with the data scientist to translate analytical outputs into clear reports and client-facing presentations. Support the development and documentation of internal data standards and SOPs for portfolio monitoring. Assist with onboarding new projects into the data pipeline, including metadata collection and validation. Contribute to research on energy generation benchmarks and project performance norms to improve anomaly detection thresholds. Required Skills & Experience Degree in Data Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Economics, or a related field — recent graduates only (not currently enrolled as a full-time student). Hands-on experience with data analysis and working with large datasets (SQL, Python, or equivalent). Strong attention to detail and comfort working with messy or incomplete data. Familiarity with spreadsheet-based analysis (Excel or Google Sheets) including pivot tables, lookups, and formulas. Strong written communication skills — able to translate data findings into clear summaries and reports. Ability to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced, startup environment with limited oversight.
Desired Skills & Experience Experience with dashboarding or BI tools (Looker Studio, Google Data Studio, Tableau, Power BI, or similar). Experience with or strong interest in agentic AI tools and workflow automation (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, n8n, Zapier, or similar). Familiarity with renewable energy concepts — solar PV generation, capacity factors, energy yield, RECs, or I-RECs. Experience with data pipeline or ETL processes, even informal ones. Exposure to version control (Git) or collaborative data workflows. Interest in climate tech, impact measurement, or ESG data. Eligibility To be eligible for this role, candidates must meet the criteria specified by the Clean Foundation, specified here under the section "Youth Interns" - https://studentenergy.org/green-jobs/
Compensation & Terms Duration: 6 months, with work expected to begin immediately. Compensation: $30,000 CAD for the internship period, based on experience and other factors.
