Track Maintainer, Team Lead is responsible for providing daily leadership to the team, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills. Working in a customer-oriented environment, the Team Lead works to maximize efficiency and safety, and is responsible for ensuring the rail line is maintained in accordance with the established standards and that the employees are supported in carrying out their daily activities. This position is a 1 year term role.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Act as the working team leader while performing regular duties; Coordinate daily work projects and job briefings.
  • Assist in conducting track and switch inspections and general repairs and maintenance alongside the maintenance team operating track construction equipment as required.
  • Perform the cleaning and maintenance of all crossing and flangeways, coordinate snow clearing and removal programs.
  • Ensure regular maintenance of all tools and small machines is completed and equipment is kept in good working order.
  • Conduct job hazard analysis, report unsafe working conditions, and ensure hazards are repaired or restricted immediately.
  • Be a leader in safe work practices; responsible for the mentoring of employees in all aspects of safe operations, initiatives and perform efficiency tests.
  • Coordinate the delivery of training and the developmental requirements related to the department; provide ongoing mentorship to the team
  • Ensure all employees are current with Cando’s best practice documents, policies and guidelines.
  • Conduct toolbox and close out meetings
  • Actively participate with the team; participate in training or company initiatives as required.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and mentor others.
  • Excellent teamwork skills; strong customer service skills
  • Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings, policy and procedure manuals, and bulletins Basic understanding of computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with people of all backgrounds and levels of comprehension.
  • Extensive knowledge of equipment, standard operating practices and regulations governing the Canadian Rail Operating Rules relating to Track Maintenance.
  • Ability to work outside general work hours in an emergency; work takes place in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement in providing information to internal or external customers in a courteous and tactful manner regarding sensitive or confidential issues.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in track construction and/or track maintenance
  • Minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory or leadership position
  • Background in engineering, design and construction is preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude is an asset
  • Rail experience an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license, Canadian Rail Operating Rules certification, TIGS (or the ability to obtain and maintain)
