About the role

Description

At RWDI, we resolve complex challenges related to air quality, noise and vibration, and risk for a wide range of industrial, commercial, and government clients. Our integrated design approach leads to innovative solutions in sustainability, environmental engineering, wind engineering, microclimate studies, acoustics, and ventilation. We are committed to advancing the science of building performance while prioritizing the health, safety, and sustainability of the environments we help create.

If you’re passionate about building and want hands-on experience in a unique and dynamic environment, we encourage you to apply. We are currently accepting applications from students for our four month Model Builder Co-op Position, beginning September of 2026. The position will be located at our Guelph Office.

As a Model Builder Co-op, you will support RWDI’s Model Shop by constructing physical scale models used for environmental testing in our three Guelph wind tunnels. These models play a critical role in simulating and studying real-world conditions.

Key Responsibilities

In this hands-on role, you will:

  • Build intricate cityscapes at scales typically ranging from 1:300 to 1:400
  • Work with foam and a wide range of other model-making materials to create accurate, durable components.
  • Interpret technical drawings, building references, and photographs to ensure precision and realism in each model.
  • Use a variety of hand tools and shop equipment to cut, shape, and assemble model elements.
  • Collaborate with a skilled team to produce models that directly support engineering and environmental analysis.

This position is ideal for someone who:

  • Enjoys working with physical materials and building things by hand.

  • Has strong attention to detail and takes pride in accuracy and craftsmanship.

  • Is eager to contribute to meaningful projects that impact environmental design and engineering.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Background/Qualifications of a Candidate:

  • Strong interest or experience in hands-on building or crafting (e.g., model-making, woodworking, mechanics, studio art/design, or other creative hobbies)

    • Ability to, or interest in, constructing detailed scale models using various building materials (e.g. acrylic, styrene, foam, etc.)
  • A strong aptitude/proficiency for spatial awareness and the ability to think/conceptualize in 3D is required – this is essential for success in this role

  • Good hand skills working with small hand and power tools, solvents, and glues.

  • A detailed proficiency in computer applications, particularly with AutoCAD (experience with RHINO Sphere is a bonus, though not required)

  • Ability to work/collaborate effectively within a team environment

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

  • Proven capabilities to set job priorities, manage tasks, and meet firm deadlines

Additional Information

Additional Documents (Optional): You may include extra materials, such as a portfolio or examples of hands-on projects, to support your application. We would love to see your work, but please note that these additions are not required to apply or to be a potential candidate.

Hourly Rate: Commensurate with experience.
