About the role

The School of Climate Change and Adaptation is accepting applications for up to five (5) temporary Student Research Assistant positions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Dr. Aitazaz Farooque, Professor & Associate Dean, in collecting geo-referenced soil, water, and environmental samples in lab and field environments
  • Support geospatial data collection and analysis from agricultural fields
  • Contribute to agronomic and plant production efforts through advanced technologies and sensor networks
  • Assist with data preparation for hydrological models and machine learning and deep learning applications
  • Assist in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and remote sensing applications for Atlantic Canadian industry
  • Investigate barriers to adopting climate-smart technologies in the Atlantic Canadian context
  • Assist in robotics and automation for the development of climate-smart applicators
  • Assist with prediction and forecasting (evapotranspiration, yield, soil properties, and drought) using climatic, soil, and crop variables in Atlantic Canada
  • Participate in training for sustainable agriculture technologies and production systems to promote climate-smart agriculture
  • Engage in industry field days and meetings to present research findings
  • Receive training in traditional statistical techniques for data analysis
  • Gain experience in advanced machine learning techniques for data analysis
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports and manuscripts

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a current UPEI student
  • Strong professional and technical skills
  • Good academic standing with a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to work in both lab and field environments
  • Willingness to travel within the Atlantic provinces for data collection
  • Background and knowledge in precision agriculture technologies
  • Familiarity with data preprocessing and analysis techniques
  • Familiarity with machine learning, remote sensing, and AI methods for agriculture applications

REQUIRED:

  • Valid driver’s license
