About the role
The Opportunity:
The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting two (2) Equipment Operator 2 - Parks. This position is responsible for safely and efficiently operating medium-weight, power-driven construction equipment, such as skid steer loaders and medium-sized packers or rollers, as well as driving automotive vehicles including tandem and single-axle trucks. The role also involves inspecting, adjusting, and performing minor maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment, in addition to carrying out a variety of labouring duties in support of operations.
Top Key Responsibilities:
- Truck and Specialized Vehicle Operations - Operate trucks to haul materials, equipment, snow, and waste between locations. Perform seasonal operations including sanding icy roads, cleaning roads and drains, removing catch basin sludge, watering roads and park areas, and flooding ice surfaces.
- Skid Steer Loader Operation - Operate a small rubber-tired skid steer loader to excavate, backfill, load materials, remove snow, clear vegetation, and perform park landscaping and road maintenance tasks.
- Roller Operation - Operate a medium-sized self-propelled roller to compact asphalt and other materials in accordance with required specifications.
- Operation of Other Similar Equipment - Operate equipment requiring a similar skill level, including large tractors and attachments, snowplows/blowers, line-marking equipment, and gang mowers.
- Operation of Other Equipment - Operate additional equipment requiring lesser or greater skill levels as assigned, such as small tractors and loader/backhoes.
- Equipment Inspection and Maintenance - Inspect equipment prior to use to ensure safe and efficient operation. Perform minor maintenance, adjustments, and attachment changes, and report mechanical issues to the Supervisor. Work assigned shifts and support after-hours call-ins as required.
- Labouring Duties -Perform general labour tasks such as shoveling materials, patching potholes, sweeping, and cutting brush and trees using hand and power tools.
As our preferred candidate, you will have:
- Grade 8 or equivalent.
- Completion of courses in defensive driving, traffic rules and regulations, safety and first aid or equivalent.
- One year experience in related construction activities, to provide skill in the operation of assigned equipment and knowledge of the methods and materials used in Parks maintenance, or Roads or Water and Wastewater construction.
- Knowledge of the operating characteristics, functions and capabilities of assigned equipment and of the required maintenance and adjustments (e.g. obtained through on-the-job training).
- Valid Alberta Driver's License with a "Q" endorsement. (Tandem truck drivers require a Class 3 License.)
- Ability to operate equipment to the required level of skill and to use various hand tools associated with equipment operation and maintenance and labouring work.
- Ability to cooperate with colleagues as a team and to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to exert moderate physical effort (e.g. changing attachments, moving lengths of water hose, shovelling and other labouring activities).
- Ability to work in positions which may be cramped (e.g. in cab) and subject to vibrations (e.g. driving over rough ground).
- Ability to work outside in all types of weather and in conditions which may be noisy, dirty and occasionally wet or disagreeable (water or sewer leaks).

Remuneration:
$30.52 to $35.91 per hour
Hours of Work:
80 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work may be required when needed.

This is a temporary position with an anticipated term of 7 months.
