Hours of Work
Typical hours are Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
This position offers up to 40 hours per week and requires flexibility throughout the summer.
About the Opportunity
The Town of Devon is hiring two (2) Fixed-Term Public Works Labourer I team membersto support municipal operations during the busy summer and fall season.
This is a great opportunity for students who enjoy working outdoors, staying active, and gaining hands‑on experience in municipal infrastructure, maintenance, and public service. You’ll work alongside experienced Public Works staff and contribute directly to keeping Devon safe, clean, and welcoming for residents and visitors.
What You’ll Do
Under the direction of the Public Works Lead Hand, you will assist with a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and operation of Town infrastructure.
General Labour & Maintenance
- Assist with asphalt pothole repairs and sidewalk trip‑hazard inspections
- Help maintain roads, stormwater infrastructure, and Town property
- Remove fallen branches, debris, or obstructions
- Assist with snow removal if required early or late in the season
- Support cemetery setup and seasonal maintenance
- Perform general shop and yard cleanup duties
Equipment & Vehicles
- Assist with basic vehicle and equipment maintenance
- Support preventative maintenance activities such as greasing, fluid checks, and inspections
- Use hand tools and light to medium‑duty equipment safely
Utilities Support
- Assist with water meter installations, testing, repairs, and documentation
- Assist with natural gas services and meter changes (under supervision)
- Support solid waste services, including waste cart repairs and replacements
Health & Safety
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) correctly
- Work in a way that keeps yourself, coworkers, and the public safe
Working Conditions
This job is hands‑on and physically active, perfect for students who like working outdoors.
- Majority of work is outside in all types of summer weather
- Requires lifting (up to 50 lbs), standing, walking, bending, and using tools
- Exposure to noise, dust, vehicles, and construction environments
- Occasional work in trenches or near utility infrastructure (with training and supervision)
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or currently enrolled student
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract
- Reliable, punctual, and safety‑conscious
- Willingness to learn and follow direction
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (required prior to employment)
Assets (Nice to Have)
- Previous summer or labour‑related work experience
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Interest in trades, engineering, public works, or municipal careers
