Environmental Engagement Intern

Sustainable Waterloo Region (SWR) is seeking an enthusiastic and organized co-op student to take on the role of Environmental Engagement Intern. In this dynamic position, you’ll play a key part in supporting and delivering our Microforest program. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of people, planet, and purpose!

As the Environmental Engagement Intern you would fulfill the following roles: Microforest Program Support the Community Engagement Coordinator with the execution of the fall Microforest planting events. Attend all Microforest events for the fall season. Assist the Community Engagement Coordinator with site visits as required. Support the coordination of orders and deliveries of required trees, plants, transportation and supplies for onsite planting events. Assist with leading adult corporate partner volunteers and/or programming for students and teachers on planting days.

Communications Assist the Community Engagement Coordinator with social media and blog content for the Microforest program. Support creation of content for monthly Community Update newsletter.

Other duties as required.

As a strong candidate for this role, you have the following skills, attributes, and experience:

Passion for environmental issues, community-based leadership. Experience planting trees or working outdoors is an asset. Experience with event-planning, and adhering to a budget. Experience working cross functionally on multiple teams and bridging ideas together. Outstanding organizational skills with a strong attention to detail. Team player with the ability to work with a diverse group of people. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Impressive time management skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects of varying natures simultaneously. The ability to remain calm under pressure. The ability to work independently and as part of a team. A demonstrated ability to creatively integrate a theme/message into an event, making it stand out. Experience with data analysis; survey results, post-event metric analytics. Experience with EventBrite, MailChimp, MailMerge, and WordPress is an asset. Availability outside of 9 AM-5 PM for events and volunteer meetings. This position is dependent upon funding approval. Applicants must meet the following criteria: Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution Applicants must be a student who holds Canadian citizenship, Canadian permanent residency status, or Canadian refugee status. Applicants must be pre-approved to participate in the Eco Canada Student Work Placement Program (https://eco.ca/swpp/). Please provide your employee's application ID in your cover letter. Duration: 4 month co-op beginning September 2026 and concluding December 2026.

Work Location: This role is hybrid, with current in-office day on Wednesday (subject to change). This position will also require on-site work during community events. Our office is located at evolv1 in Waterloo, Ontario.

Work Hours: This position requires a flexible schedule as events can occur outside of regular office hours.

Wages: 35 hours per week at $17.60 per hour, or the current minimum wage.
