The Facility Services department supports the academic mission of McMaster, its cutting-edge research, and world-class teaching and learning. Our team does this by developing innovative spaces to study, research, and work and by keeping our campus safe, clean, well-maintained, and beautiful. Our team of approximately 400 professionals is the primary caretaker of the university's physical environment and is one of the largest teams on campus. Our 400 dedicated professionals take pride in delivering quality and reliable services that support the University’s world-renowned teaching and research. The team is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 69 buildings, encompassing approximately 8.5 million square feet of space and about 377 acres of land. The team also supports other entities such as Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster Innovation Park (MIP) and others. Facility Services operates 24/7, oversees more than 50 active construction projects at any given time, and manages over 12,000 service requests each year.
Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment within assigned University facilities. This position performs a range of cleaning and maintenance tasks, waste and recycling removal, and furniture movement. The Custodian follows established cleaning procedures, safety protocols, and organizational standards to ensure high levels of cleanliness, hygiene, and operational effectiveness are maintained for all users of University spaces.
Representative Accountabilities
Primary Accountabilities
- Perform a variety of cleaning tasks including but not limited to dusting, vacuuming, glass cleaning, surface disinfecting, and washroom sanitation, following established health and safety protocols.
- Perform floor care maintenance, including sweeping, mopping, burnishing, waxing, and operating powered cleaning equipment.
- Perform carpet care and cleaning using appropriate equipment and techniques.
- Assist with the setup, relocation, and movement of furniture and equipment to support operational or event needs.
- Conduct post-construction and post-disaster recovery cleaning, including re-cleaning settled surfaces, cleaning interior and exterior windows, and assisting with safety measures such as signage and barriers to maintain safe, accessible spaces.
- Complete general waste disposal and recycling in accordance with University sustainability practices.
- Perform snow removal and salting functions during inclement weather and maintain snow logs.
- Update and maintain cleaning logs and checklists to support quality assurance and compliance with University standards.
- Assist with tasks related to guest room or temporary accommodation including maintaining supplies and performing detailed cleaning, as applicable.

Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: 6 months of related experience.
