About the role

The Exterior Patrol Worker will focus on conducting Seed Visual Presence within the perimeter of TMS downtown buildings and enforcing rules and expectations of guests’ behaviours and activities offsite to TMS premises. this role requires a commanding presence that inspires, respect and does not trigger confrontation. This role will also redirect community participants to access internal and or external resources as well as maintaining a safe and welcoming environment to all stakeholders.

Position Type: Fixed-Term, Full-time (July 2026 to March 2027) Schedules: Sunday to Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  or Wednesday to Saturday from  8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Reporting to: Community Impact Centre Supervisor Location: 102 Community Impact Centre Number of Positions to Fill: 2 RFR#: 2109

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Security and Safety Duties:

  • Patrol the external perimeter of The Mustard Seed’s downtown campus during operational hours;
  • Enforce rules and expectations of guests’ behaviours and activities offsite to TMS property in a professional, dignifying, and respectful manner;
  • Redirect clients to internal/ external resources and support when appropriate;
  • Respond appropriately and ensure that no guests are loitering, setting up encampment, and/ or engaging in substance use in exterior areas within TMS line of sight;
  • Support CSWs in pre-screening guests outside before accessing 102 CIC;
  • Provide crisis interventions, including responding to drug poisoning incidents occurring on TMS premises;
  • Delivering non-violent crisis intervention, and using de-escalation techniques as required;
  • Remove and properly dispose of any drug paraphernalia found during safety checks;
  • Support guests who do not meet TMS programming or eligibility criteria by seeking to identify their needs and connecting them to the appropriate resources in a respectful manner;
  • Collaborate with other internal departments (Housing, Shelter, Wellness) and/or security personnel when applicable to maintain safe environments for all;
  • Maintain specific records such as statistics, reports, incident reports, and other computer files;
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.

Guest/ Community Engagement and Support Duties:

  • Foster positive and meaningful relationship with all stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, donors, guests, community members, and other visitors;
  • Create a safe, healthy, and respectful environment for all community participants accessing our services and programs;
  • Work collaboratively with guests to encourage positive changes in lifestyle and behavior through supportive relationships and day-to-day interactions by promoting programming to the guests and encourage them to participate in programs;
  • Respond to conflicts in a healthy, respectful and safe manner;
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g., First Aid, ASIST, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, etc.) and attend meetings as required;
  • Enforce guest suspensions and escalate to the Restoration Committee when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS 

  • Minimum of 1 year Security experience is preferred;
  • Possession of valid Alberta Basic Security Training is an asset;
  • Front line experience working directly with vulnerable groups, such as adults experiencing homelessness, poverty, mental illness, addiction and Canadian newcomers is preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, communicate, and work effectively with a diverse range of people from various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;
  • A self-starter and able to work well in a cross-functional team, with strong collaboration skills;
  • Good relationship building and communication skills;
  • Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation skills;
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Fast paced and demanding work environment.
  • Moderate physical effort is required. Considerable periods of standing, walking, lifting, mainly outdoors with exposure of extreme weather conditions.
  • Moderate mental effort is required to pre-emptively identify and assess conflict, problem solve, maintain healthy boundaries, and provide empathetic support for people facing extreme personal struggles.
  • May be exposed to or required to respond to overdoses and other verbal or physical incidents.
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
    • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
