THE OPPORTUNITY

The Junior Communications Advisor is responsible for supporting and developing communications materials for a variety of City initiatives, programs, and services. This position primarily has tactical responsibilities including developing and implementing communications/marketing/promotional plans, identifying appropriate tactics and content creation, writing and editing, supporting some graphic design needs of the department and supporting other team members in the development/execution of communication plans/activities. The incumbent provides communications support to various departments and project teams. This position reports to the Manager of Communications.

This is a temporary, full-time position for 6 months. The annual salary range is: $69,323.80- $82,391.40

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Communications support, planning, and implementation
  • Develops, implements, coordinates, and monitors a variety of communications, promotional, and marketing strategies across current and emerging platforms including print, digital, social media, and website content.

  • Supports other team members in the development and implementation of communication plans/activities.

  1. Writing and editing
  • Writes and edits a variety of communications materials to support various communications, promotional, and marketing plans.

  • Ensures all materials are written in plain language and are effective for the audience and medium.

  • Drafts speaking notes and other requested items for members of Council.

  • Ensures materials targeted to the media are written in Canadian Press (CP) style.

  1. Graphic design, photography, and videography
  • Creates and assists with the design needs of the department, such as development of social media graphics and other print and digital materials.

  • Provides basic photography and videography support for the department for items including, but not limited to, photo ops, social media reels/stories, and other operational needs.

  • Ensures creative materials align with City branding.

  1. Social media support and monitoring
  • Monitors social media accounts and online platforms, responding to comments.

  • Manages and schedule posts on social media platforms, ensuring a consistent and professional voice

  1. Media Relations
  • Tracks media coverage.

  • Supports media and public relations activities during emergencies.

  1. Client Relations
  • Develops, builds, and maintains strong, positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Actively participates in Corporate Communications team initiatives and supports the Corporate Communications team.

  1. Other Duties
  • Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
  • Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
  • Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the “Values, We Live By”.
  • All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
  • Employee are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
  • Perform other job-related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications:

  • Post secondary diploma in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.

  • A minimum of three (3) years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of best practices as they relate to communications, promotions, and marketing.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organization skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet tight deadlines.

  • Capable of working in a fast-paced environment.

  • Sound interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport, effectively interact, and maintain positive relationships with a variety of clients.

  • Active team member with the ability to work under minimal supervision.

  • Solid political acumen.

  • Proficient skills with photo and video tools and programs.

  • Strong customer service focus.

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, social media tools, and web content management systems.

Asset Qualifications:

  • Membership in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS).

  • Municipal government communications experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Class 5 Driver’s License

  • Access to a vehicle.

Working Environment:

  • Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • This position may be required to work a flexible work schedule outside of regular hours including weekends and evenings.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Working remotely and in an office environment.
  • Exposure to noise levels that may exceed 85 decibels.
