Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
This part-time academic will be required to teach POLI 4505.03, Human Rights: Legal Issues during Fall Term 2026: September-December 2026, currently scheduled in person on Fridays from 1435-1725.
Course description: This course focuses on the legal issues and debates that are implicated in the development and enforcement of domestic and international human rights. It will address the changing legal status of international human rights treaties and conventions, with attention to the work of international treaty bodies, courts, tribunals, and the implications of their decisions and recommendations in domestic contexts. It will look at the impact of the development of international criminal courts and tribunals – with attention to the debates concerning state sovereignty and accountability, and what enables or restricts intervention in human rights crises. A central theme of the course will be theories and approaches to justice, and their relation to the force of law and the challenges of legal systems and obligations.
The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including lectures and test preparation. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD, or nearly completed PhD, in Political Science and a strong knowledge of the topic. Previous university-level teaching on this topic will be an asset.
All offers of employment as a Part-Time Academic are conditional upon sufficient student enrolment in the course and approval by the University.
Salary Range/Pay Rate
