SUMMARY: Jumpstart is a track in the 3-week, residential summer bridge program, Rattler Summer Institute (RSI), that has the goal of helping incoming first-year St. Mary’s SET students who are not Precalculus or Calculus-ready to take one college-level math class at an accelerated pace. This will help them begin their fall semester better positioned to complete their math requirements in a timely manner. RSI peer tutors assist these students by clarifying and/or reinforcing course content, assignments, and other material, as needed. Further, RSI peer tutors provide and integrate effective learning and study strategies for their assigned students.

RSI peer tutors are held to the same standard as any St. Mary’s University employee. The RSI peer tutor is an extension of St. Mary’s University and will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.

JOB DETAILS: Position begins Friday, July 17, 2026, and ends at the conclusion of the RSI, Friday, August 7. The compensation for this position is a $1,500 stipend paid, in two installments. Further, RSI peer tutors are required to live on campus, at no cost, for the duration of the program. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided daily, Monday – Friday, at no cost.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide individualized and group tutoring to assigned students (tutees) in the RSI Jumpstart program, Mondays through Fridays in the afternoon and some evenings. To support faculty as needed, be present in class Monday through Friday morning. Attend and complete tutor training and development sessions as required by department leadership. Attend program events, including orientation, a community service project, socials, and closing ceremony to help promote a sense of belong among RSI students, which may occur on the weekends. Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared in the tutoring relationship. Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of at least one semester of study at St. Mary’s University; Must maintain active enrollment at St. Mary’s University while tutoring. Must have recorded B+ or higher in MT-2412 (Calculus I). Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; must be in Good academic and student conduct standing. Must have a positive instructor referral/recommendation (see link to recommendation form below). Must be continually open and willing to learn and develop skills in role. Must be conscientious, prompt and have respect for the confidential nature of the office. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are necessary. Professional demeanor, appearance and strong work ethic. Must possess ability to take initiative, work independently, meet timelines, organize information, and attention to details.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Working conditions include a combination of working in the classroom and residence hall. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business. While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
