Role Description This contract Java Software Engineer role is a hybrid position based in Toronto, ON, with flexibility for partial work from home. The engineer will design, develop, test, and maintain Java-based applications and microservices that support AI-first and cloud-native solutions. Day-to-day responsibilities include implementing features using the Spring Framework, writing clean and efficient code, performing code reviews, and troubleshooting production issues. The role also involves collaborating with product managers, architects, and other engineers to refine technical requirements, optimize performance, and ensure security and scalability. The Java Software Engineer will contribute to continuous improvement by adopting best practices, enhancing development workflows, and supporting deployment and integration activities. Qualifications Strong software development skills with experience in designing, building, and maintaining scalable applications. Proficiency in Java and core programming concepts, including object-oriented design and data structures. Hands-on experience with microservices architecture and building distributed systems. Practical knowledge of the Spring Framework and related libraries for backend development. Familiarity with cloud-native environments, APIs, RESTful services, and CI/CD pipelines. Ability to write clean, testable code and use version control systems such as Git. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, hybrid team setting. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Experience with containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and relational or NoSQL databases is an asset. Interest in AI-first design, intelligent automation, and modern software engineering practices.
