Course Number and Name: JMU192-492Y1/MUS4740/1H - Small Jazz Ensemble Course Description: Students are assigned to small jazz ensembles by audition, rehearsing with faculty for two hours and independently for an additional hour each week. Repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary jazz styles. Attendance at all assigned sessions is required. Class Schedule: Small Jazz Ensemble duties include two hours of coaching each week with the assigned small Jazz ensemble (times TBD). Coaches are required to attend and evaluate group performances at the Rex and Walter Hall (other venues TBA). The final ensemble recordin Months of contract: September 2026 to April 2027 Salary: $9,997.48 Estimated Course Enrollment: 5-10 per section TA support: yes Qualifications: Graduate degree in jazz or equivalent professional experience. Extensive knowledge of jazz repertoire, improvisation and performance styles. Active jazz performing career combined with demonstrated excellence coaching jazz ensembles at the university level. Duties: Meet with assigned small jazz ensemble for coaching session two hours each week, advise on the selection of repertoire for assigned student ensemble. Attend and evaluate ensemble performances and recordings. Participate in marking and grading of the assigned ensemble and submission of grades in accordance with policy. Consult as necessary with the Performance Office and Area Head of Jazz Studies regarding visiting artist masterclasses and additional performance opportunities for small jazz ensembles. Maintain reasonable hours of student consultation outside scheduled coaching hours.
