Job Description

The Digital Accessibility Project Assistant provides support in the improvement of accessibility of digital content across the university. Working collaboratively with campus partners, this role will assist in resource development, training delivery, and document remediation initiatives.

This role is ideal for a student interested in accessibility, user experience, communications, or accessible digital content design.

Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the development of digital accessibility resources and maintain a centralized library of accessibility resources.
  • Research and collect new content aligned with evolving accessibility standards and campus needs.
  • Assist in the planning and delivery of training sessions on digital accessibility topics, including PDF remediation and accessible document practices.
  • Assist with alternative format conversion, PDF remediation, and document repositories projects across departments.
  • Apply accessibility best practices to ensure documents meet compliance standards and leading practices in accessible documents.
  • Support initiatives focused on improving accessibility in research dissemination.
  • Assist website owners in identifying, deleting, or remediating outdated/inaccessible PDFs
  • Help communicate recommendations to the broader campus community.
  • Contribute to a user-friendly guide outlining best practices for selecting accessible formats.
  • Work closely with persons with disabilities and users of assistive technology for testing and user experience.es and users of assistive technology for testing and user experience.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program: Information Science, UX, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Disability, Communications, or a related field of study at McMaster University.

Experience: Not required.

Assets:

  • Strong digital literacy and familiarity with accessible alternative formats

  • Basic understanding of digital accessibility (e.g., WCAG principles, digital document accessibility leading practices)

  • Ability to learn and analyze new tools and platforms for campus use feasibility

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to translate technical concepts into user-friendly language

  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to suggest practical solutions

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders (faculty, staff, students, departments)

  • Basic experience with accessibility assistive devices and tools (e.g., screen readers, magnifiers, accessibility checkers)

  • Basic knowledge of HTML or web content management systems

  • Interest in creating instructional materials (videos, guides, tutorials)

  • Interest in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and inclusive design

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
