Job Summary
This part-time Academic will teach in person clinics (labs) in a practical clinical setting where we do routine elective surgery including diagnostic imaging and veterinary dentistry. Intake, discharge , monitoring, #1 role guiding, assessing, providing feedback, and supervising students in clinic, and helping to facilitate rounds. This course is being taught in the fall term (September to December 2026) and the labs are currently scheduled for Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 08:35am to 1225pm.
The Part-Time Academic will be responsible for evaluating and recording student’s skills against a set standard and will share duties amongst the teaching team to carry out teaching clinics. This position reports to the Chair of the Department.
VTEC 0222 Clinical Exercises IV – Course Description
This final course of the Clinical Exercises stream is a capstone course. Upon completion of this course and the related VTEC0221, the graduate can perform entry-level clinical tasks in the veterinary practice workplace. Task areas from prior Clinical Exercises courses are reviewed, some are elaborated, and students are re-evaluated. Students engage in laboratory exercises involving anesthesia, surgery, diagnostic imaging and veterinary dentistry. Classroom activities include elaboration of medical, surgical and nursing topics and review in preparation for the veterinary technician national exam (VTNE).
Qualifications/Requirements of Position
Qualifications:
- A Registered Veterinary Technician
- Member in good standing of the Eastern Veterinary Technician Association and the N.S.V.M.A.
- Two years of companion animal private Veterinary practice
Desirable attributes include excellent oral and written communication, collegiality, organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as an excellent ability to work in a team environment, as there are shared duties amongst the teaching team to carry out teaching clinics. Competent and confident in companion animal anesthesia and small animal surgical assisting (routine electives) and patient monitoring. The incumbent will be evaluating and recording student’s skills against a set standard.
It would be an asset to have teaching experience in an academic institution, as well as flexibility in hours due to patient care needs.
